CRUSH OF THE WEEK: Miya Folick

Crush is back!
Sometimes you gotta take a few months off to get the rest of your life in order and rediscover your muse. 2016, new year, new me and all that. The fact is, this column originally was born out of the infatuation with one artist, which lead to ongoing longings towards a whole wave of artists. But thing with waves is inherently they are made of peaks and valleys. Sometimes you got one, sometimes you don’t. Sometimes you just gotta do other shit, which I did, and now I’m back, baby, and I can see that new crest forming…
Which brings me too the one and only Miya Folick. I discovered her in my favorite way to discover artists, not as an artist at all. By that I mean, stripped of the context of hearing music (hers is great) or seeing them live (she’s a bad ass on stage) first. It was simple, we ended up being introduced to each other at a party and then dragged to some tacos through mutual friends. It was a casual enough meet, but there was definitely something unique about this person. Later I found out she made music, so I checked it out and was pleasantly surprised. A few weeks later I made the effort to see her play and… WOW. OK, I knew this girl was special, but I didn’t understand how much.
So how do you describe Miya’s music? Reminds me a lot of PJ Harvey and Cat Power, but with the physical presence of Milla Jovovich from The 5th Element and the confidence of The Rock. Beauty, power and excellent songwriting mixed into one. It’s that feeling of when you see a shooting star from far away, endless magic.
What’s most exciting is that she’s just at the start. I have a feeling 2016 is going to be a very exciting year for her and her band. New year, new them and all that. I feel lucky that I get to see her perform again next week at Sundance. If I were you, I’d make a point of seeing her yourself sooner than later, because like a shooting star, if you blink you may miss her.
