It’s with much pleasure that I finally get to make Emmy The Great one of my Crush of the Weeks. She’s def one of my original crushes of the IHC age from when I began looking for new music and tracking new artists…

I can’t quite remember the year I came across her, but I remember it was some UK publication. Previously I’d seen references to this girl, Emmy the Great, Emmy the Great, again and again and I was like ‘Who is this??’. I tracked her down online and before hearing her music I was enthralled for a shallow reason: she was cute! When I finally did listen to her music moments later I became even more enthralled because her music was good. The boldness of her name only leant to the charm…

Fast forward a few years and Emmy has evolved into a british music persona. I’d compare her to the UK version of Jenny Lewis, St Vincent and maybe a little Lana Del Rey. She distinctly has her own personality from all of them, but those are some names for context. She’s built quite a name for herself, releasing several well received singles and even scoring the film ‘Austinland’. The last couple years she’s been quiet on releasing music though, until now…

Last week Emmy released the first single from her upcoming new EP, Swimming Pool, and it’s a great step forward for an artist that was already great. Everything that made Emmy interesting in first place is still there but this new release is decidedly more mature and I like it. Ive had a chance to hear the entire new EP (out 1/26) and it’s all… GREAT.

Check out the video for the first single below. Emmy, you will now and forever be my crush!
