There is no doubt the retro sounds of the eighties have been reinvigorated recently due to the growing resurgence of synth based pop. The element that seems to be intriguing fans and drawing crowds recently is that distinct vocal quality that can’t be mistaken. John O’Regan, stage name Diamond Rings, takes it from the familiar falsetto hooks of 80’s heroes to rock raps for the new age wave.
The Toronto native just released his second full-lenth album, Free Dimensional, on Astralworks this week to rave reviews, and is set to perform on tonight on, The Late Show with David Letterman. Tracks like, (I Know) What I’m Made Of, are confident and progressive. Choosing favorites on the album becomes increasingly difficult with every listen, but there are certainly stand outs including, I’m Just Me , and, A To Z. His first album, Special Affections, which debuted in 2010, was also highly acclaimed and earned him a tour spot with Swedish pop queen, Robyn.
The official music video for, I’m Just Me, keeps to the 80’s vibe with lazers, smoke, and dancers abound, kind of reminiscent of the dance clubs from Blade Runner. My personal obsession with the 80’s might make me a bit biased, but I can only imagine the live performance as an endless electro disco. Fortunately, he will be playing the CYP2 Two Year Anniversary Show so I can witness for myself the bling of Diamond Rings.
