Square Enix Kingdom Hearts

Take one part mind-crunchingly popular video game franchise, one part pop culture juggernaut, mix well and voila — Kingdom Hearts.

An entire gaming generation grew up alongside the Final Fantasy/Disney hybrid series, eagerly anticipating whatever came next. And despite the 11 year (and counting) gap between Kingdom Hearts 2  and Kingdom Hearts 3, there have been a number of “side” games in the series to help quell the hunger of its fans.

The newest of these is Kingdom Hearts Unchained χ, a mobile game set to make its bombastic landing in the States later this week. The game has been a major hit in Japanese markets ever since its release last year, and going by the anticipation radiating off Twitter, it’s sure to make a comparable splash in the west.

The game finds its place in the excessively-complex franchise somewhere near the start of it all. Set before the legendary Keyblade War — which itself is set before the first main game of the series — Unchained χ utilizes a combination of previous and brand-new characters and worlds to fashion a narrative connecting itself to all three main-series games and directly leading into Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue.

Stateside Android and iOS users, ready your Keyblades for April 7th. Kingdom Hearts will never be the same!
