Listen to “Waves” by River Tiber and See Why Drake Keeps Sampling Him

Has your life been lacking lately in melancholic and sentimentally dark R&B, with suave crooners with voices as smooth as recently Nair-ed legs? Cool. Meet producer/multi-instrumentalist River Tiber.

River Tiber – whose actual name is Tommy Paxton-Breesley – has been making. … waves (cue audience groan) ever since fellow Torontonian musician Drake sampled his sensual vocals for the mixtape we’re STILL playing, If You’re Reading This, It’s Too Late (on the song “No Tellin’“). Tiber has since released the aforementioned song from where the sample came, “No Talk.”

Now he’s back with “Waves” the first single off his much-anticipated upcoming sophomore EP When The Time is Right, out on September 16.

Upon the first listen, it’s easy to see why Drake thought Tiber’s vocal chops were worthy of sampling. Dude can sing. In an interview with Complex, River stated that he’s adept at playing musical instruments, and while it shows a keen ear to attractive production in the song overall, the ability to emote in his voice might be the standout in “Waves.” It’s got very James Blake vibes, but with a little more playfulness involved, and it’s way darker and more sensual. Sigh, we love River Tiber.

As we speak, he’s adding more studded collaborations to his belt with the likes of BADBADNOTGOOD and Ghostface Killah, so keep your eyes peeled for more from him.

When The Time is Right is out next month, so in the mean time, check out his other songs on SoundCloud, and watch this music video for “Prophets,” on of our favorite songs of his.
