If you’ve noticed lately, we are having a lot more shows that delve into the more abstract worlds of dance music. For those of you that are paying attention, a few weeks ago we brought out IDM texture enthusiast, Machinedrum, to Los Globos for what turned out to be one wild thursday night. On September 28th, IHEARTCOMIX is pleased to welcome Machinedrum back with his collaborator Praveen, to perform this time as Sepalcure. With a love for 90′s house vocals and organic snares, Sepalcure create dub and two step inspired house music that is just as complex as it is effective. Joining them will be Warp Records producer, Clark, whose collection of work is radient and visceral, employing vintage recording methods to produce soundscapes with organic insturmentation. If that wasn’t enough, Djemba Djemba will be on hand to celebrate the release of his upcoming single on Mad Decent; with experimental instrument producer, Sahy Uhns, on hand to kick off the night. You would be hard pressed to find a more progressive show in the United States than this one. Do not sleep, Los Angeles!!!

Maybe you’ve been sharing the same thoughts as me lately: Why does everyone have Green-Blue hair??
I feel like it’s gotten to a point that whether I’m at the punk show or at the mall, everyone has signed on to become a #Seapunk. What was something I initially took as a cute initiative started up by ZOMBELLE and ULTRADEMON has blossomed into a full on movement. Even celebs have jumped on the bandwagon, whether or not they know it or not. So it begs the question, what does it all mean???
There must be some kind of underlying conspiracy or some sort of master vision that is beyond normal comprehension. Think about it, how much money did they spend marketing the Kevin Costner flick ‘Waterworld’ and did it have anywhere near the impact these two punks are? NO.
To solve this mystery I went straight to the source, ZOMBELLE herself. Finally the answers are revealed!
———————
MYSTERY: What are the secret origins of Sea-Punk?
ZOMBELLE: #SEAPUNK has been public since it’s inception, summer 2011- there are no secrets. I had just finished recording my album TROPICULT and there was a hive mind happening within my network and when a friend had a dream about a punk on the beach in a leather jacket with barnacles where the studs used to be and tweeted the conjunction #SEAPUNK it made perfect sense.
BONUS QUESTION: Green-blue hair is popping up everywhere right now. Do these stray followers fall into the movement or is there a deeper level that gets people entry?
ZOMBELLE: Blue-green hair isn’t necessary, contrary to popular belief. More than anything my fans associate my blue hair with #SEAPUNK and as being iconic so they dive in and go blue. Blue also happens to be my favorite color and is a beautiful choice for hair color! My hair was blue before the hashtag, so was (#SEAPUNK co-creator) Albert Redwine/ULTRADEMON. Together we run CORAL RECORDS INTERNAZIONALE and MAINFRAME (clothing line) both of which are associated with the #SEAPUNK aesthetic.
Because we’ve received so much press brought on by this movement (#SEAPUNK’s not a genre it’s a movement/lifestyle/feeling) it’s spread like crazy and now you have people like Azaelia Banks and Katy Perry giving us shout outs and doing their best to ‘get it’.
And there you have it. MYSTERY SOLVED!
Now let’s check out a couple jamz and download some free music!
Having just released his debut EP at the end of last year, Barcelona/Montreal beatmaker, Sinjin Hawke, has certainly begun to make a name for himself as one of the more advanced producers around. As a resident of the Boomclap parties in Montreal, Sinjin Hawke contributed a voice that was missing in the city’s underground bass scene, gaining notoriety through a series of bootlegs and collaborations that recontextualized popular artists by pairing them with elements from different types of club music mosre specifically rap and grime. The result is a collection of low end inspired, celestial dance music with emotional depth; far more eccentric than your standard acapella rework.
From there, Sinjin Hawke relocated to Barcelona, where he finally had the time to conceive his own original productions. The Lights Ep was the direct result of that move, highlighting the advanced production methods of his bootleg work, but now with a more shimmering orchestral mentality. The arrangements are lush with washes of spiraling melodics; all impressively calculated and controlled. His ability to produce each instrument or sample within the same sonic climate helps to collectivelty shape the experience as each track builds layer upon layer before smashing through with precision breaks, augmented rhythm patterns, and the occasional horn section.
For his upcoming tour, Sinjin Hawke turned his focus to rewriting and reconfiguring his set to perform live. His recent live debut on Boiler Room TV sees the producer successfully making the jump back to analog devices, trading in his computer for an MPC, a few synths, and drum machines. Regardless of the medium, Sinjin Hawke remains dedicated to his craft, and continues to push the boundaries of his own limitations while still creating music far more advanced than many of his contemporaries.
Sinjin Hawke will be performing live at Los Globos coming up on September 14th. Joining him will be Clicks & Whistles, FuzZ, and Keltronix. In the meantime, check out his debut EP, The Lights, out now on Pelican Fly.

A few weeks ago a friend of mine showed me the trailer for the new Battlestar Galactica spin off prequel Blood & Chrome. I’m a huge sci-fi and Battlestar fan and just about shit myself when he showed it to me. It’s beyond awesome (even though it’s cheesily cut like and to the same music as the ‘Girl With The Dragon Tattoo’).
The new show is supposedly a prequel that details the big war the Admiral Adama cut his chops in. The effects are phenomenal and the action even more crazy. I began to wonder, how had I not heard of this yet??
After some keen google action, I discovered the show had not officially been picked up yet. There’s no plan, no budget and unless you’re a diehard nerd, most people hadn’t heard about it. Even my craziest BG fan friends mostly came up empty when asked about it, but have been unanimously excited. S
o I pose this question: IS THIS SHOW HAPPENING OR NOT?!?!!
Check out the teaser trailer here and dream of a better world where this exists:
