I felt really lost for a while. I worked 5 different jobs while in college and it was exhilarating running around my campus, working on different projects I was passionate about. Once I graduated, though, I didn’t know what to do with my newly found free time. This followed me as I traveled for the first time without my family. I was in Colombia for the past three weeks and spent most of my time reflecting over cups of the best coffee in the world.
This week’s playlist is heavily inspired by the sounds I heard in coffee shops in Medellín and Cartagena. You really don’t realize how starved you are for different styles of music until you travel 3000 miles from home and return with 9 mosquito bites and an addiction to coffee. I’m serious about the coffee, I drank 4 cups a day.
1) Kid Froopy – “Drive Slow”:
One of the most memorable moments of my trip was juxtaposing ambient sound in Medellin vs. Los Angeles: so unfamiliar, yet comforting. Sampling what sounds like a busy day in a cafe, Kid Froopy‘s song “Drive Slow” mixes the conventional with a refreshing, vibrant beat.
2) Purity Ring – “Asido”:
In celebration of the 5 year anniversary of their debut album, Shrines, Purity Ring released “Asido”. It is soul-crushing as it is beautifully sound with eerie visuals. Purity Ring was one of my favorite bands in high school and it’s awesome to hear them now better than ever.
3) A$AP Mob – “RAF” – ft. A$AP Rocky, Playboi Carti, & Quavo:
What a loaded song feature list. A$AP Mob‘s song “RAF” is all about stuntin’, the beat is everything, and I’m all here for the self gas-up.
4) Jaws of Love – “Jaws of Love”:
Kelcey Ayer, Local Natives’ vocalist, is working on solo material under the moniker Jaws of Love. This track highlights the vulnerability of Ayer and his spectacular vocals. It’s a really sappy love song as well if you’re into that kind of stuff.
5) Sylvan Esso – “Rewind” (Echo Mountain Sessions):
Sylvan Esso re-do “Rewind” for their upcoming visual EP Echo Mountain Sessions. It’s mastered so well, it sounds as if they’re performing in your bedroom. Plus, the usage of real instruments is a breath of fresh air to this already stellar track.
6) BADBADNOTGOOD – “In Your Eyes” (feat. Charlie Day Wilson) (Nosaj Thing remix):
Nosaj Thing always manages to insert a taste of mystery in his remixes. His remix of BBNG “In Your Eyes” adds a nice flair to the track without losing the essence of the original. It’s a great fusion of styles.
7) Jamie xx Boiler Room Reykjavík DJ Set:
Jaime xx is one of my favorite producers. He’s so innovative with his sounds and manages to have eclectic yet cohesive DJ sets. Reminds me of how random the radio was in Colombia, but somehow it worked.
