I love being in my 20s, but the overbearingly confident ’90s child in me yearns for yo-yos, snap bracelets and new Missy Elliott songs. Every ’90s kid wants the best of both worlds – that nostalgic Jersey Club sound from our youth along with the future bass vibes pumping at the secret shows of today. VenessaMichaels knows what I’m talking about.
She describes her sound as #2090 – mixing everything great about the ’90s (including aesthetics – give me bright gaudy designs and end the minimalist movement, kthx) with trap and bass music – and she’s showcasing that sound with a new EP with remixed tunes from our favorite throwback songs.
Check out her remix of Destiny’s Child’s uber-iconic “Say My Name” below:
“Say My Name” was always a favorite of mine, even though my nine-year-old self knew nothing about lying-ass men back then (ah, the good days). Synths and snares galore, it’s got us thanking the based gods that someone’s finally made a danceable (and huuuge) remix of one of Queen B’s old-school songs.
This is the first of Venessa‘s #2090 series – she’s got more remixes coming, so stay tuned to her Soundcloud for those. But you should best check out her 2090 EP as well if you’re really feeling nostalgic:
