Why We’re Losing Our Minds Over the New Pokémon Sun + Moon Games

It’s been 20 years and six generations at this point, but damn it, I still get excited over new Pokémon releases. Black, White, Blue, Green, Yellow, Sapphire, Slate, Laker Purple, Beige, Really Really Gross Bowel Movement Brown – Okay, so I might have lost count after a while, but it doesn’t matter anymore because the company’s just announced two more titles for the new-age nerd in all of us: Sun and Moon. A totally new generation of Pokémon games, Sun and Moon will feature new Pokémon, trainers and story lines as well as a new thing to obsess over: vehicles. The actual cars, it seems, will hold much more significance than ever before.

The announcement came on the heels of the franchise’s 20th anniversary. Yes, it was revered officially as Pokémon Day, and it of course entailed a ton of cool shit around the world including a Pokémon boutique pop-up at JapanLa, and a Pokemon party hosted by Drew Barrymore off the Sunset Strip (soooo trendy).

But the major announcement of the day were the two games, which would bring forth another new generation of Pokémon. The games will be out later this year, but that’s all we know so far. Doesn’t mean the internet didn’t have fun, though:

Twitter nerds have been ablaze about the announcement for a week now, but that’s to be expected. Is Pokémon still in though? Are the cool kids playing? Maybe. If there’s one person who’ll be in line at Gamestop later this year, it’s UK Grime rapper JME, who not only sampled the theme song in a diss track last year, but bargained with a ton of his fans for … shiny Pokémon cards.

Or probably Grimes, whose tumblr has time and time again revealed her a Pokémon fan.

Or even Vince Staples:

A lot more familiar faces in line than I thought.
