In an ever evolving music industry many musicians have continually altered their sound to stay relevant, however drawing on their foundation often times informs their new direction. Greek musician Panagiotis Melidis, aka Larry Gus, began his solo project after dissolution of his punk duo Ginger. Naming his new project after the greek word “Larigas,” translated throat, he brazenly started producing and performing his new electronic project which included improvised looping and on-the-spot construction of kaleidoscopic beats. After signing with DFA Records in 2012 and releasing Silent Congas digitally last year, he has followed it up with the brilliant 10-track full length, Years Not Living.

Years Not Living is definitely a far cry from his punk background but some elements still thrive. His percussion is inspired by the rapid snare rolls and resonating cymbals of his past, yet the accompaniment is something fresh and flavorful. Vocally, his soft, simplistic timbre compliment the spacious melody in first track, With All Your Eyes. Listen to the track below and pick up the new album now available on DFA Records.

In early August, Larry Gus released an official music video for The Night Patrols featuring what seems to be a greek dance party. A room full of funky dancers seems to be the comfort zone for Gus as inhibition becomes the theme of this musical celebration. Watch as these dancers on loop make for a candid style video that might just make you want to join the party.

Larry Gus will be performing live at Check Yo Ponytail 2 with fellow DFA Records artist Shit Robot, and AVAN LAVA at the Echoplex September 16th.
