Growing up in the pacific NW, collecting records at 16 with limited access to music, my exposure was mostly to classic rock, new wave and of course… riot girl. By the time I made it to college my record collection was pretty hefty, but like most record collectors no matter how many times you move houses, throw out your back transporting crates full of vinyl and curse the gods, the hunt for more is never ending.
Upon moving to Eugene, OR (where I went to college) I spent my lunch breaks at a crusty record shop called House of Records. I was 18, painfully awkward and shy as hell, but even then I became a familiar face with the “too cool for school” staff. They would set aside rare girls vinyl like Nina Hagen, Grace Jones, Stevie Nicks, Bjork and anything and everything riot girl.
One year later I walked into House of Records on my lunch break and was offered my very first DJ gig. It was for a radio show called “The Girls Room” that took place on the local college radio station. I said yes, immediately but later that night at home I realized I said yes to something that I had the slightest clue how to do and I nearly shit my pants.
Over time I figured it out of course and hundreds of live gigs later, it’s still one of my fondest memories.
With that said, I am proud to be bringing back “The Girls Room” in the form of a new weekly column that highlights my favorite female musicians of the past and present.
Seeing as the tomorrow night is the Check Yo Ponytail Three Year Anniversary, I want to highlight Crystal Castles since I’ve had so many epic dance floor moments to their self titled debut album.
