As we are now well into the swing of 2014, IHC is back in action gearing up for the return of Check Yo Ponytail! Recently, I had the opportunity to reflect on last year with upcoming headliners Superhumanoids. Read on as we discuss the New Years mentality, Martin Scorsese, and the beard to talent ratio in music video directors.
O S A K A: You guys traveled pretty extensively last year with complete North American and European tours, along with sold out shows at the Troubador back home. Have you ventured out this extensively before? What was your favorite stop?
Superhumanoids: Last year was the most extensive our tour schedule has ever been. It was awesome. The crowds in Tulsa and Berlin made those shows really special.
Do you see a difference between fans back home vs. on the road? How about other countries?
1. Language/accents
2. Diet
3. Fashion
4. Ability to stay awake/party sensibility
What are you guys most looking forward to in 2014?
We’re looking forward to recording and releasing music fluidly. We are very proud of Exhibitionists, but what people don’t know is that there was a two year lapse between recording and releasing that album.
Was the time lapse due to any specific reason? Did you guys perform the record live during that time at all?
We were very patient when it came time to find right label to put the album out on (Cheers Innovative Leisure!). We had released music on our own up until that point, and wanted help exposing as many people as possible to that group of songs. We were touring and playing the majority of ‘Exhibitionists’ constantly during that period of time. It created this maddening disconnect of playing certain songs at the shows and having completely different music available for people to listen to after the fact. Here’s to fluidity in 2014!
Are you the kind of people that look towards the new year as a definitive transition or timestamp on life or is it just another night of drinking with friends?
It’s a healthy combination of both.
Our good friend Taylor Cohen recently directed your video for Bad Weather? Where did the idea for the collaboration manifest? Does it have anything to do with Martin Scorsese? Also, doesn’t Taylor have a great beard?
It is based on Martin Scorsese’s film The Big Shave. It’s awesome that you caught the reference :) Yes, Taylor’s beard is exceptional; the perfect ratio of salt and pepper.
I guess he also co directed the video for So Strange w/ David Altobelli. What’s the story there? Does David also have a good beard? I feel like that is the sign of a great director.
Is that the sign of a good director? David does have a very handsome beard. We are really happy he came on board to help with the video.
I know you guys will be touring since we’ll be seeing you at Check Yo Ponytail on the 17th, but can we expect to hear any new songs, you know…off an upcoming record of sorts?
Yes.
Well there you have it…
Superhumanoids will be performing at the first Check Yo Ponytail of 2014 on January 17th at the Echoplex. Joining them will be James Supercave and Dead Times. Until then, check out the video for So Strange below. See you on Friday LA!
