Listening to punk music is still really satisfying even when you’re not 14 years old, dyeing your hair an awful (yet, amazing) shade of green and writing the DK logo on whatever backpack or school notebook you could get your grubby little hands on. As much as electronic music, in all its glorious configurations, has been actually pretty freaking rad the past few years (wassup Dubstep and EDM?), it feels almost physically necessary to witness a sick, shredding punk band surfing and smoking a fat joint alongside this Digital Wave. What you may not realize is right now, punk and electronic are totally bros (no, not those Bros) sharing that feeling of primal urgency in the club. 

Case in point, I witnessed 3-piece Vancouver cold-punk band Lié play sandwiched in between two straight-up EBM/Acid House acts (ASSS and Andrea K. of Vice Device) at a warehouse show in Portland and the MDMA-laced crowd formed a circle pit as easily as they could of transformed the show into a rave.

Canadian’s Brittney West, Kati J and Ashlee Luk, aka Lié, totally nail American West Coast punk music. They’re like a darkwave version of the Wipers with a trippy shoegazer’s touch of reverb and a headbanger’s penchant for distortion. Reminiscent of early Husker Du and Misfits (with maybe a touch of 90’s alterna-vibes a la Nation of Ulysses, and Huggy Bear), it feels totally modern and original. Lié would be a perfect fit somewhere between Youth Code and Perfect Pussy in your next playlist.
