ELOS is a natural by-product of Los Angeles’ beat culture, steeped in the almost-anything-goes attitude of Low End Theory, a club night that every Wednesday for more than eight years has been inspiring beat-makers and is the breeding ground of some uber-talented artists such as Daedelus, Flying Lotus and Nosaj Thing. Not to mention, he’s heavily honed his skills as a member of Team Supreme, a crew that selects a BPM and sample every week for each artist to use in the cypher. Add in inspiration from jazzy renditions of West Coast hip hop to Japanese video games, and you’ll see why ELOS is your man.
A member of the Alpha Pup label, his previous full-lengths are tracks are fun and funkadelic. Using an array of acoustics and wild snaps the mix incorporates tonal depth of lo-fi melting into hi-fi concepts with panned beats and side-chained melodies that might make you feel like you’re physically spinning. ELOS premiered two new tracks this week on his SoundCloud that ring with slightly melancholy, early PlayStation synths with the funky bass plucks just floating in the mix. Every sound and beat is a parallel world of it’s own, yet they mesh together to create a coherent universe, and that’s what makes ELOS a great beat-artist. You can check out his full-length albums on his Bandcamp and see him perform this Saturday with D33J, Dawn Golden, and Low Limit at Los Globos!
