Usually, when we start out writing a label feature, we have to painstakingly “use our brains” to “come up with intriguing intros,” but we found a quote on the Google that sums up Biz 3 better than we ever could:
“Arguably the most prevalent PR firm in independent music today.” – URB Magazine
Mic dropped. For nearly 20 years, Biz 3 has spearheaded publicity campaigns around the nation, bolstering their reputation amongst the art, comedy and music communities along the way. Describing who they represent and whose careers they’ve launched into infamy is difficult because it’s pretty much everyone, and that “everyone” tends to defy categorization.
On their roster is mostly legends. Musicians from Daft Punk to Skrillex, J. Cole to Danny Brown, Lauryn Hill to Justin Bieber, Diplo to Sampha are under the Biz 3 umbrella, as well as seminal labels like Vice, Def Jux, XL, Fool’s Gold, Mad Decent, OWSLA, etc. They also rep Fred Armisen of SNL and Portlandia, as well as a handful of highly innovative artists and chefs, assuring unquestionable status and prestige as one the the top tastemakers in the land. Is Biz 3 omnipotent and probably made of a nebulous magical glitter cloud? Survey says yes.
Biz 3 also has their own record label, the affably-named Biz 3, and manages Skrillex’s label/creative powerhouse OWSLA. In fact, the two even share an office. It’s a pretty cool office.
Running the whole thing is badass head honcho Kathryn Frazier, who founded Biz 3 in Chicago in 1996, before you even embryonic. Today, she’s expanded her empire to include a staff of national publicists in Chicago and Los Angeles who work with diverse roster of over 80 bands, rappers, authors, filmmakers and visual artists.
Needless to say, we are f-ing psyched to have them at APW this year. Their showcase lineup is killing it … take a look below, and when you’re done, scroll down to check out some of our favorite tracks from their APW artists.
Plus, their flyer is really endearing, so, there’s that.
