Eric Andre turns white and Hannibal Buress gets action in Heems’ new video for “Sometimes”

Heems has just released the first video for his debut solo album, Eat Pray Thug, and its every bit as crazy as it should be, considering it features Eric Andre changing races and Hannibal Buress sensually making out with a woman who won’t make out with Eric Andre because of the luscious color of his skin.

… WHAAAAAT.

Heems. Just have our babies. Just have them.

Heems’ former bandmate, Ashok “Dapwell” Kondabolu stars in it as well. Just thought we’d throw that in there.

The song is called “Sometimes,” and the video was inspired by a late-night infomercial Heems saw while on tour in India. The video deals with race relations both in the U.S. and abroad, making a pretty clear statement about the way men of color are viewed in society. Heems, who wrote and directed it himself, plays an infomercial snake oil salesman who convinces Eric Andre to buy skin lightening cream to get chicks, but when he bleaches his beautiful flesh, he realizes he fucked up majorly because black Hannibal Buress has his girl on the couch, and is layin’ the mack down like a professional. Late night VHS-style insanity ensues.

Heems is as much of an artist as he is an activist, so it’s especially rad when he combines music with a social call to action. And considering that as recently as 2010, the skin-lightening cream industry was worth $432 million in India and growing at 18% annually,  the “Sometimes” video is  not only an accessible entry into the conversation of race, but relevant to millions of people as well.

Eat Pray Thug was last released month to widespread critical acclaim (get it here), and Heems is currently planning a tour of the US and Europe to promote it, so keep your panties on for a bit, yes? We’ll update you on tour information as it comes, baby.
