We are gathered here today, to witness the butteriest video content the internet had to offer this week.
Several blessed music videos were born, including offerings from Plaitum, Ryan Hemsworth and brand-new L.A. pop disciple, Bloodboy.
But perhaps the most holy moving image of all? You already know what it is: the Star Wars: Rogue One trailer. Amongst other things.
Let us pray.
1. Plaitum – “Jagwa”
If you love dark, brooding synths and war drums laced with “glacial cries,” and who doesn’t, you’ll love Plaitum. They’ve kind of got a Crystal Castles/ Purity Ring thing going on, which is really hitting the spot for me because there’s a definite void for that type of music those older bands have left with their sparse releases and hiatuses and whatnot.
“When we conceived ‘Jagwa’ we imagined it having a very intense, neon-y late night feel to it which the directors captured really well,” the Plaitum told Pigeons + Planes. “Both the song and the video are about an explosive relationship and they explore different areas of that – the video the more carnal side and the song more emotional.”
Visual wise, this video is full of all the floating, replicating humans insinuating sex you’d ever need. There’s some definite carnal choreography in here, and everyone looks like a human centipede. Not the butt-eating kind, the Animorph kind.
2. Road to Missed Calls: The Tunji Ige Documentary
Road to Missed Calls is documentary that captures rapper/producer Tunji Ige’s personal journey over the last year and elucidates some of the people who have played a major role in his recent success.
One of those people is producer Noah Breakfast, and Tunji has a really great quote about him: “Drake got a Noah. Kanye got a Noah. Tunji got a Noah.” Tunji also got a documentary, so Tunji must have made it.
There’s even a touching moment Tunji spends with his mother, who gives him some potent, vaguely tear-jerking life advice. A must-see if you have eyes.
3. Ryan Hemsworth & Lucas – “Angel”
Wanna see a guy do interpretive dance yoga in an aquarium and some iPhone footage of a beach? Of course you do. You love awter.
That’s what goes down in the video for “Angel,” a track that’s the product of Ryan Hemsworth and Lucas‘ joint EP, Taking Flight. No word yet whether “Angel” is about an angel fish, but if it’s not, I’m gonna be pissed.
With Lucas, I would say he’s more talented than me as a producer,” Hemsworth told Billboard. “These are amazing artists that just for whatever reason haven’t got the fanbase yet. I just want to work with whomever. If I can work with Future that would be amazing but I’m just as happy to be creating music with anyone. Talent is talent.”
4. Bloodboy – “Human Female”
I can really relate to the title of of this song by L.A.’s newest pop human-hurricane, Bloodboy.
For her first trick, she just dropped this Millicent Hailes-directed music video for her debut single “Human Female.” And with it, she’s already established a precedence of provocation and visual boundary-pushing, something that blends in a very satisfying way with her brand of powerful, ultra-melodic pop.
As a little press release about the song told me, “Expanding on the song’s existential tenor, the video depicts a woman going through a crisis feeling like she doesn’t connect to anything, hence the random scenes seen throughout her journey to self-actualization and liberation.”
On account of the boobs and face-bugs, I wouldn’t recommend watching this with your grandpa unless he is very chill and in the know.
5. The Star Wars: Rogue One Trailer
Rogue One is the first original Star Wars screenplay outside the trilogies, which means it’ll probably break several of the rules caused you to fall for it in the first place.
But apart from the sheer fact that it exists and is amazing, the trailer has a cool little insiders-only secret I’m telling you about so you dick-over your friends with Star Wars knowledge in casual conversation: apparently, the London Underground was where most of these trailer scenes were shot. Rather than build a costly set in LA or something, the Star Wars production took place in the architecturally amazing Canary Wharf station – a far cry from a space station orbiting and waiting to dispatch laser-based death on a planet below.
The film, which is out in December 2016, is set between Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope. It focuses on the efforts of the Rebel Alliance to steal the plans to the Death Star, an event that was referenced in the opening crawl of A New Hope. Only, this film is slightly different in that although it’s a grounded, war-based movie, it’s one in which normal people, not Jedis or people with the Force, have to come together to fight the Empire.
So democratic, so Bernie.
