Vertical Ambition: An Introduction to Tilly & The Wall

There has always been a slight quirk to the way Omaha’s, Tilly & The Wall operate. If their tap dancing rhythm section wasn’t a giveaway already, the band is not interested in the conventional. From tracking their debut in Conor Oberst’s basement, to covering the ABC song for an appearance on Sesame Street, Tilly & The Wall succeed in creating undeniably fun music that everyone can appreciate.

While the band has done some growing up since their inception over a decade ago , Tilly and the Wall thrive in maintaining that edgier, more adventurous spirit we identified with as teenagers. On their latest album, Heavy Mood, the band finds themselves writing and recording during what may be the most drastic life changes we collectively experience as humans. Several of the members have since married and had children, while others have relocated in pursuit of their other interests. That being said, Heavy Mood, acts as a beacon of sorts, a reminiscent tonal connection to the songs that defined them a decade ago, but now with an added sense of self identity. While 2004’s, Wild Like Children, may have been their own adolescent call to arms, newer tracks like Defenders find a balance between their evolved mentalities, ambitiously eager while remaining poised and ready for whatever life throws their way.

Tilly & The Wall will be performing this Thursday at the Echoplex for the next Check Yo Ponytail 2. Joining them will be Rainbow Arabia, Batwings Catwings, and Jeffery Jerusalem. In the meantime, take a trip down memory lane and check out the band performing their version of the ABC Song on Sesame Street.
