If you own your own label, it is safe to say you’re doing something right. That’s just the beginning for L.A. based producer Paul Salva who is best known by his surname. The Chicago native found success producing during his stint in San Francisco and has become an inspiration for many with acclaimed releases over the past year. He is the owner of Frite Nite, a label that was once an exclusive staple of San Francisco night life but has since expanded onto the national stage. He is joined by fellow DJ/Producers Shlohmo and Groundislava (just to name a few) as members of the Friends of Friends collective.
Salva’s musical adeptness spans a range of genres from house to grime to more recently, trap. Salva wrapped up 2012 by collaborating with RL Grime on a trap remix of Kanye’s Mercy that became an instant club banger. Salva’s first full length album Complex Housing was released in 2011 armed with wavy house-influenced tracks like 40 Karats and the slightly more hectic Issey Miyake. Salva’s most recent venture is the 5 track EP, Odd Furniture combining a medley of hard hitting house and trap.
We caught up with Salva in Austin at SXSW back in March where he gave lucky fans a rare performance accompanied by rapper Pusha-T. Check out our exclusive SXSW interview with Salva below.
Salva has commanded dance floors all over the world and has built himself a following in Chicago, S.F., L.A. and abroad. Salva takes the stage at IHC Sundays this Sunday July 14.
