Alice Glass Returns From the Dead With Cathartic and Vengeful Song “Stillbirth”

It’s been eight months since former front-woman of Crystal Castles, Alice Glass, tweeted that she would be leaving the band (eight months since my musically-inclined heart broke). In her statement, she promised she would be back with solo music – and last week the electronic witch house gods graced us by fulfilling that promise … but the release of her single is a little bittersweet.

Stillbirth” is a brutal and deafening song reminiscent of the more abrasive CC songs in the past (think “Doe Deer” or “Insulin”). Distortion abounds while Alice’s vocals break through. It’s loud, and particularly vengeful when you read the statement that accompanied the release of the song:

“Years ago I began the process of trying to remove myself from an abusive relationship that started when I was a teenager. Over the course of that relationship I was systematically cut off from anyone and everyone that I could truly be close to. I was talked down to, yelled at, locked into rooms and criticized daily about my abilities, my weight, my looks, my intelligence and almost every move I made. When I couldn’t take it anymore and I wanted to end the relationship I was threatened, then I was told I was loved, and the cycle would begin again.?

Alice continues to go on and open up about her abusive relationship, encouraging young men and women to try and find help and sources that will remove them from their situations.

Proceeds from the digital purchases of “Stillbirth” will go towards RAINN (Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network). And though the release of her first single comes with an important message, Alice has also promised that new music is still on its way, so peep her SoundCloud for updates.

For now though, “Stillbirth” is best listened to at the gym when you hate every molecule of everything because no amount of sit-ups undoes the damage last night’s Little Cesar’s did, or after an especially bad break-up. Two middle fingers to that.
