We’re so excited to announce that Neon Gold is having their SXSW showcase at Austin Party Weekend this year.
For the uninitiated, Neon Gold is NY-based boutique record label that focuses on perfecting the idea of the single. And given that the first single they ever released was Passion Pit’s “Sleepyhead” in 2008, it’s fair to say they’ve crossed that whole “perfecting” thing off their to-do list.
Some background: Neon Gold was born in 2008 when childhood friends Derek Davies and Lizzy Plapinger realized that the record label they’d always dreamed of creating couldn’t wait until they graduated college; it had to happen now (now as in seven years ago). So, in their sophomore year of college, when other students were forgetting the steps of cellular division and looking at porn during Intro to Massive World Suffering and Other Depressing Historical Times, Derek and Lizzy started Neon Gold. How they ever had time to sleep is beyond us.
Initially operating as a vinyl-only singles label but since expanding into album territory, Neon Gold has launched the debut releases and international careers of pop prodegies including Charlie XCX, Passion Pit, Ellie Goulding, Marina & The Diamonds, Gotye, The Naked & Famous, Icona Pop, ASTR, and Tove Lo. But beyond their own competitive roster, Neon Gold are often credited with the discovery and initial support of a number of other successful artists including Vampire Weekend, Lana Del Rey, CHVRCHES, Grouplove and Walk the Moon.
Neon Gold also runs a successful promotions empire, operating popular monthly club nights in NYC, London, and LA (LA’s is called Popshop and it happens at the Echo). Adding to their zeitgeist is the fact that they also produce approximately 100 events a year in addition to their flagship annual showcases at South by Southwest, CMJ and The Great Escape Festival. Give their reach, we guess it wouldn’t be surprising if we also told you they had a kitten adoption pizza party every week inside a Quizno’s, but that’s yet to be confirmed. These people are everywhere, and we love it.
