Chamakay is much more than just another warm, heavy hearted anthem from pop maestro, Devonté Hynes. On his latest release as Blood Orange, Hynes taps into his feminine side and channels some of the production mentality found in his work with Solange and Sky Ferreira, combining them with the effortless perfection of his first album, Costal Grooves. Chairlift’s Caroline Polacheck can be heard offering a harmonic presence whose echoes find a cohesive balance between Hynes heavy hearted perceptions and the dense tenderness of his arrangements.
The video itself finds Hynes and director Adam Bainbridge traveling to Georgetown, Guyana to reconnect with Hynes’ distant relatives he’s never met before, including his 92 year old grandfather. Hynes can also be seen exploring the town, stopping only to vogue and serenade the camera. Playful gestures that help us further see a bit of Hynes personal character now that he’s finally decided to come out from behind the mixing console.
Chamakay can be found HERE and on Blood Orange’s upcoming LP, Cupid Deluxe.
