Awards season is in full swing and there are certainly some strong contenders for ‘Best Movie of the Year’ including 12 Years A Slave, American Hustle, and Her. The one movie this year that really had a profound and lasting message for me was Her. Director Spike Jonze delves into the dark and unknown psychosis of love in a society contiually evolving with every update of the iPhone. Her left me with the overwhleming concept that love in the traditional sense is slowly fading.
After the completion of Her, Lance Baggs, friend and collaborator of Spike Jonze, was moved to shoot a short documentary capturing reactions from various iconoclasts of American society when asked about love in our time. While opinions vary vastly from person to person, it’s evident that the notion of love strikes at the very core of our existence in these intimate interviews. Achieving what has traditionally been seen as ‘true love’ maybe a thing of the past, but my hope is that as technology develops it will allow us to communicate more viscerally rather than cutting us off even further. Watch the captivating and thought provoking documentary below and try to define what love in the modern world means to you.
