DAY IN THE SUN: An Introduction to Sage the Gemini

Since the age of 14, Sage the Gemini has been obsessed with rap music and despite receiving little help from collaborators in the beginning, his persistence is finally paying off. Forced to be self-sufficient, Bay area’s Dominic Wynn Woods learned how to make beats, produce, mix and master in high school just so he could share it with his friends. He recalls “All I cared about was music. I would stay up all night working on tracks and go to school tired. It didn’t matter. I wanted to be heard.” sage1

Taking inspiration from the likes of Chris Brown, Usher, Jay-Z and Pharrell he became a student of every sub-genre of the hip hop industry and in 2008 his unyielding determination paid off as his track You Should Know went viral on Myspace with over three million views. This was the break Woods was waiting for and it wasn’t long before he joined the infamous hip hop crew HBK Gang. He understood the importance of developing a local presence and played countless Bay Area shows while developing his own unique sound. Speaking on the subject Woods notes “I want to start my own genre—like a crossover of R&B and Bay Area party hip-hop.”

Now a viral sensation his tracks Like A Red Nose and Gas Pedals have millions of views and are topping the Hip Hop charts. Staying true to the Bay, he was honored to have HBK Gang’s IAMSU featured on Gas Pedals and encourages the dance aspect of his music as a positive influence for the younger generation. “I like to keep the violence to a minimum. Dancing helps kids in a big way that no one wants to pay attention to. If they’re dancing, it’s all good. I grew up listening to Iamsu. To have him on (Gas Pedals) is a blessing.” Watch the viral video below and you’ll be singing the hook the rest of the day.

Sage the Gemini makes his Check Yo Ponytail 2 debut October 18th at the Echoplex alongside his homies IAMSU! They’re joined by FaNaTTicZ, Kool John, and BRRRANG-A-DANG for show featuring the new generation of hip hop heavyweights.
