The internet may have successfully brought Death back to life, but unfortunately the revival wasn’t without sacrifice. As so beautifully and respectfully laid out in the documentary, A Band Called Death, the late David Hackney was a visionary far beyond his time who was never rightfully credited during his time. It was David who first began learning guitar, paving the way for his brothers to join in on the ride. It was he who conceptualized Death as being more than the morbid connotation that is accepted in the public sphere, instead choosing to actualize it as just another part of life.
It was also he who said no to Clive Davis. A single move that potentially cost Death their early notoriety. That move was not without internal conflict as well, with the brothers all arguing about whether or not it was a good idea to change the name and become successful musicians vs. standing up for your right to conceptualize your vision however you see fit. At the end of the day, the brothers’ mantra of “Stand by your brother” prevailed. With that, Death gave it’s final breath.
