Dutch E Germ is taking dance music to it’s foregone conclusion: beautiful noise. Producer Tim DeWitt brings the noise kids, punks, weirdos, and yes even EDM bros too. It’s music that is abstract yet artistic – making it perfect for dropping drugs and dancing your ass off. DeWitt definitely brings extensive experience to his music, starting out in the 90’s DC hardcore scene with his band The Cranium and later co-founding Gang Gang Dance, as well as producing their first album Saint Dymphna. He’s been sampled by Kanye (“HBA War”), scored Hood Bye Air runways and soundtracked movies such as 12 O’ Clock Boys. He’s a regular at NYC’s Ghetto Gothik parties and has been involved in projects ranging from Fatima Al Qadiri to Teengirl Fantasy.
His new mixtape IN.RAK.DUST, out on NYC label UNO, is his first-length project in six years and it swirls minimalist harsh piano with repetitive bass and panned noise in Leslie-speaker psychedelia and IDM. Textural, guttural and spiritual, Dutch E Germ mixes natural sounds with whacked-out electronics and lush hip-hop production. Black Sea sounds like a glitched-out hardstyle meets dark, dubstep Aphex Twin that segues perfectly into his song Nami Nami with it’s gothic, Middle Eastern vibes.
The title track In Rak Dust is reminscient of Steve Reich mixed with a little new age hardcore making this record feel like an 2k14 version of House.Dutch E Germ’s forte is making dance music more than four-on-the-floor beats to trip out on, however you won’t need any drugs in order to experience transcendence.
