Friday evening I had the privelege of attending a screening of Dave Grohl’s new film, Sound City. The film tells the story of the legendary Sound City recording studio and recounts tales of legendary artists coming in to record on the studio’s state of the art, hand wired Neve mixing console. Whether it was Johnny Cash, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Fleetwood Mac, Metallica or Kurt Cobain they all shared the space and recorded directly to tape, a process that was the standard before digital systems like Pro Tools changed music editing forever.
Highlights of the film include live recording sessions and interviews from Rick Springfield, Stevie Nicks, Dave Grohl, and Trent Reznor. Dave Grohl’s film is a tribute to the studio, the people, and the process that made Sound City a truly unique and historic place. Watch the trailer below for a little taste of the golden era of studio recording. There will never be another time like it.
