When news of a new Future Islands album was announced earlier this month, I immediately marked my calendar and began relistening to their already solid discography. The new album Singles is set to release March 24th or 25th on 4AD Records. As a synthpop emsemble, Future Islands consistently maintains their relavencey in a music market flooded with fresh talent. Today, their official music video Seasons (Waiting On You) was released as the first single to premiere from the new album. Collaborating with long time friend and director, Jay Buim, they’ve painted a vivid and moving portrait of a middle American cowboy who finds happiness in the simple pleasures of life.
Although it’s bit more polished than previous works, after hearing the familiar tones of lead vocalist Samuel T. Herring my anticipation of Singles only grew stronger. Displaying an uncanny ability to tell heartfelt and sincere stories through music and film, Herring recently commented on his working relationship with director Jay Buim. “For us, sometimes, it’s quite spellbinding how Jay can translate our sound into an image,” notes Herring. “‘Seasons (Waiting On You)’ is a song about love, letting go, learning from your mistakes and always feeling that pull–yearning for a certain love, as time goes by and seasons change.” He adds, “It is simply a song about the human experience.” Indeed.
