Have you ever had the musical munchies and voraciously gobbled up an album but – in true munchie fashion – still felt an insatiable hunger for more? When we found Cut 4 Me by Kelela, we got to gobblin’ but couldn’t get enough, and finally Fade To Mind has answered our zombie hunger with a deluxe release.
When Kelela teamed up with Fade To Mind and Night Slugs to record her 2013 debut Cut 4 Me, it was very much an Everything Pizza for our hungry ears: a vocalist with a background diversely stretching from metal to jazz, teaming up with a whole squad of producers specializing in grimey club tracks. It was really an “everything and the kitchen sink” album, and it was risky.
But people loved it. Bjork loved it. Solange Knowles loved it. We loved it.
So when we heard the deets about the deluxe edition – vinyl pressed, no less – we went nanners. Aside from all the originals in their multi-genre glory, the original architects of the album – Kingdom, Girl Unit, Jam City, and others – provide their own remixes of the material; remixes that Kelela herself has been incorporating into her live sets. But there’s more: MikeQ, Massacooramaan, Rizzla, and Neana enter into the dialogue.
It’s all the sparse, emotional grooves of the originals, but with a bit more space for the producers to step out and shine:
Cut 4 Me‘s deluxe will be going public April 7th, but Bleep has got the pre-order right now.
