Princess Nokia is the post-popstar paradigm: she can do whatever the fuck she wants, with whatever genre she wants and has the smarts, sexiness and artistic strength to pull it off. Formerly known as Wavy Spice, Princess Nokia is the next-level alter-ego of Destiny Frasqueri. Now seeking the services of producer, Christopher Lare of OWWWLS, she transcends her hardcore rap on Bitch I’m Posh into something way more expansive and multi-dimensional. Her debut LP Metallic Butterfly recently premiered on Vice and shows her range as she goes from straightforward 212-vibe rap to spiritual R&B doused in trip hop and new age Riot Grrrl.
Infusing a wealth of influences from Anime to jazz, Princess Nokia flows about the struggles Puerto Rican woman in New York City. A sexy and self-sufficient hacker, Princess Nokia transcends the Matrix and generic raps. Dragons is a love anthem for the nu-cyber punk portraying images that are sweet with 90’s alternative culture and early 2000’s girl power. Cybiko merges hip hop with her HTML persona as both videos were made by Princess Nokia’s Smart Girl Club art collective and co-directed by Milah Liban.
Although she raps “Game Boys and High Fashion Magazines. I am an anomaly,” one would like to think she is an anomaly, but really she is an artist with a multi-dimensional world of interests and talents. She’s post-Y2K version of someone who transcends pop but can still be a Sexy Feminist in Da Club. You can catch Princess Nokia live alongside Mykki Blanco this Thursday at Los Globos so swoop up your tickets below!
