Every time a new rapper surfaces who doesn’t fit the typical mold of today’s MCs, it’s a miracle if they can outlive the initial hype surrounding their unique personalities or physical appearances. There is a delicate phase during the rise to notoriety before listeners get over the shock and move into the acceptance stage. Jody Christian, better known as RiFF RaFF, quickly turned heads in the hip hop starting in 2008. The tattoos, facial hair and southern draw accented by a reflective grill made 26 year old Texan stand out in the rap game. After several breakout hits and collaborations with the likes of Action Bronson, Caspa, DollaBillGates, Lil Debbie, and Diplo, RiFF RaFF is quickly becoming known for his outlandish flow and unique rhymes, not just the long hair and “steps” in his eyebrows.
Last year saw the release of RiFF RaFF’s debut mixtape, Birth of an Icon released on Mad Decent. An ecclectic mix of songs with a slew of appearances and producer credits from Action Bronson, Chief Keef, Caspa, and Flux Pavillion just to name a few. Whether it’s jewlery, cars, or jets with or the occasional ballad such “Time” RiFF RaFF has exploded with new videos out weekly it seems. On his latest mixtape Hologram Panda he’s heightened his game once again with a variety of new beats. Watch this cool animated music video for i Can Tell Stories (Secret Dream Edition) off his latest mixtape.
RiFF RaFF takes the stage in this Sunday’s installment of IHC Sundays at Drai’s Hollywood. Accompanied by Salva and backed by Pipes’ Stevie Be and with a Secret Guest performance Sunday it’s going to be a big night in Hollywood. Free before 11 PM with RSVP.
