Working in record stores is probably the best form of education if you’re looking to work in the music industry. You quickly gain a wealth of knowledge that goes deeper than just mainstream music and often find yourself emersed in subculture scenes. At the age of 15, Croydon native Ollie Jones, aka Skream, went to school at Big Apple record store, the epicenter of emerging dubstep scene in the U.K., all while producing beats at home. All the homework paid off when Skream met fellow beatsmiths Benga and Hatcha while working at the record store. As a resident DJ at Club Forward, Hatcha was happy to debut the early recordings of both Benga and Skream to a wide audience and things skyrocketed from there. Jones has come a long way and is now known worldwide for his incredible sets, though nowadays his repertoire varies from dub to house to disco.
Just today, Skream released a new track Rollercoaster feat. Sam Frank, displaying his versatility and possibly a new direction. The undeniable nu-disco track soars out of the gate with Sam Frank’s pop vocals leading the way. The track most definitely appeals to the dance floor but maintains the same level of composition we’re used to hearing from Jones. Many dubstep fans might be a little confused or even annoyed by Skream’s divergence from a sound he helped develop but whose to say what he’ll develop next and that in itself is reason to be excited. Listen to the new track below and pre-order it on itunes now.
Check out some hysterical tour stories from Skream and Benga as they interview for Noisey’s Back and Forth! Whether it’s reminiscing unexpected acid trips, playing dead, or streaking across stage it’s clear these two go way back. They discuss the fallbacks of EDM and the dangers of Croyden girls for entertaining session between two legendary DJs. Watch the video below before seeing Skream this weekend at Drai’s Hollywood.
This Sunday, we’re stoked to have Skream on the decks at IHC Sundays and are looking forward to the house and disco vibes he’ll be serving up. He’ll be joined by IHEARTCOMIX’s very own Franki Chan and resident DJ Stevie Be so come get sexy by the pool at Drai’s Hollywood.
