A native of South Bay, California, Jennifer Lee has been turning heads in the music community of Los Angeles and far beyond. Best known as TOKiMONSTA, Lee has been the subject of well-deserved media buzz following the April release of her latest album, Half Shadows. Despite the fame and recognition, Lee continues to be the eccentric producer that L.A. and the world has come to know and love. The so-called surrealist of Flying Lotus’s label, Brainfeeder, TOKiMONSTA is back just months after Half Shadows with a three track EP.
Clean Slate Remixes was released Tuesday on Ultra Music. The EP features Lee’s single “Clean Slate” feat. Gavin Turek and is accompanied by remixes from Blood Diamonds and Kennedy Jones. The single itself sounds like a forgotten bonus track to the already stacked Half Shadows. With its relaxed vocals, ambient touch, and sort of twangy synth line, “Clean Slate” offers listeners purity in an un-doctored and overall clean track.
That’s not to say that Blood Diamonds’ and Kennedy Jones’ respective remixes aren’t spectacular in their own way. For those of you that didn’t catch Blood Diamonds’ set at IHC Sundays last week, his eclectic style finds a welcome home in “Clean Slate.” The EP’s final track is a remix by Kennedy Jones, who rocked IHC Sundays this past weekend. Jones brings his trap backgrounds to the table in his rendition without sacrificing TOKiMONSTA’s original vibe. All in all, there’s not much to say about Clean Slate Remixes besides that it is yet another triumph for Lee. 2013 is shaping up to be a big year for TOKiMONSTA.
TOKiMONSTA will be playing at the Echoplex July 9th, backed up with performances by Brooke Candy, Pipes, and SO JAPAN.
