Tuxedo, the glorious retro project between soul crooner Mayer Hawthorne and hip-hop producer/impresario Jake One, has released a gloriously lo-fi video for their song “So Good.”
Why? Well, darling, the masterminds over at Stones Throw have a fetish for vintage analog that goes well beyond a sick vinyl collection. They’ve already dropped a few cassette albums this year, and rumor has it they heat their office with wood stoves, lit by candlelight.
Following suit (Tuxedo joke, high five), the Tuxedo video was recorded entirely on VHS. It’s like the funkiest thing ever submitted to America’s Funniest Home Videos. There’s an expressionless guitarist, and a drummer who looks so bored that he might just melt into a rhythmically-talented puddle of indifference. Even Hawthorne has that ’50s Ed Sullivan awkwardness, where you wonder how someone so profoundly un-smooth can sing his way into our hearts and panties. Most alluringly, they’ve got our homegirl Gavin Turek shaking the tambourine, and everyone here at the office was collectively like “Oh shit, we’re going to release her new single”Frontline” on our label IHC1NFINITY on April 28th, this’d be a good time for a shameless plug!”
So check it out, revel in the retro wonder, and keep your ears to the ground re: Turek’s new track!
