I remember as a kid my friends used to tell me that claymation always scared the shit out of them. Aside from that, stop motion in general really freaked them out because of the “It’s Alive!” Frankenstein feel from things that shouldn’t really be moving to begin with. I’ve always loved the different styles of animation, and how it has really progressed throughout the years. Not to mention, the time and dedication it must take to film a literal split second of a scene. Patience is one hell of a virtue in this case.

This week’s videos will take you through the different worlds of animation styles with the latest from Father John Misty, Tyler the CreatorThe Shins, and Gorillaz!

1. Father John Misty – “Things It Would Have Been Helpful to Know Before The Revolution”:

This video, directed by Chris Hopewell (who also directed the video “Burn the Witch” by Radiohead), creates a desolate world of what I would see as the morning after the revolution. This subtle lyrical video from Father John Misty’s “Pure Comedy” album really matches the restless dark vibe and tone the song gets across.

2. The Shins – “Half a Million”:

A video created with 5,566 stickers, all HAND CUT.  Directors Jesse Lamar and Nik Harper put together The Shins’ “Half a Million” music video, taking place in about over 40+ different locations! This video is killin’ me with creativity right now.

3. Gorillaz – “Strobelite”:

Watching this video makes me feel like playing Just Dance. The song “Strobelite” takes on a different perspective from the Gorillaz well known animation style into the 3D world. The Raoul Skinbeck directed music video features the Gorillaz’ virtual band members 2D and Noodle dancing in a futuristic nightclub.

4. Tyler, the Creator’s Stop Motion Film:

“The garden is not to be tampered with!” This is a look at Tyler, the Creator’s first take with Stoopid Buddy Stoodios on making his first stop motion short film from the season premiere of his new show “NUTS + BOLTS”.  I hope to see some more stop motion music videos from him soon.

5. Tyler, the Creator Goes Behind the Scenes at Stoopid Buddy Stoodios:

Looking back at all the these videos with different varieties of animation, it’s cool to know what really goes down in the process of making them; and the combination of them all in one. Stoopid Buddy Stoodios, the creators of “Robot Chicken”, shows you what really makes the stupid and funny bits you see on TV a work of art. The video shows Tyler, the Creator’s process with making his stop motion short film. Watching this makes me want to make a short of my own. Or.. just have miniature sets of shoes and clothes – just cause.
