Entertainment One and Warner Bros. Records hired IHC to help bring Lights’ new comic book and album project to life
In collaboration with eOne and Warner Bros. Records, IHEARTCOMIX oversaw the production and continuity of Lights’ concept album and comic book, Skin&Earth. Released in the fall of 2017, her much anticipated fourth album was created side-by-side with a 160-page graphic novel which she wrote and illustrated herself. This concept project is the first of its kind in scale and execution, with all pieces connecting together from music to comic, to video, to live show. In most recent news, Skin&Earth has been optioned for television by Entertainment One.
IHC was brought on in the early stages of the project to help bring the comic portion to life and worked directly with Lights as an editor and advisor. Once a strategy was laid out, IHC facilitated a publishing deal with Dynamite Entertainment that led to the distribution of six individual comic issues translated in Japanese, Spanish, Tagalog and French. After establishing this relationship, our role was to help connect the comic world back into the music from marketing strategy, artist and brand opportunities and creative consultation utilizing our experience and expertise in both worlds. Lights made appearances at the Toronto Fan Expo and San Diego Comic Con to promote the release.
IHC remained on the project once the publishing deal was done to assist with day-to-day project coordination between Dynamite & Warner Bros. Records teams. From the page to the screen, IHC also consulted and helped provide creative resources that brought the six-issue comic series to life in the music videos.
From writing the comic solicitations for preview catalogs to laying out the release calendar and assets, there was a lot of heavy lifting in the early days of translating the project to both comic and music teams. This labor intensive process was essential for this creative concept that was destined to defy norms in both the comic and music industries. IHC also worked on creative collateral and designed proposal decks to solicit potential partners.
Vol. 1, The Interactive Graphic Novel
Following the success of the individual issues of the Skin&Earth comics, the story was collected into one volume in July of 2018 by Dynamite. IHC oversaw the publication of the book including layout, design assist, the interactive codes that unlock bonus material and exclusive content throughout the book. To promote the release, IHC and Dynamite coordinated a total of four different promo events at SDCC including signings at FYE, War Machine, a panel for SyFy and her very own panel. IHC was also asked to moderate Lights’ solo panel, Running A One Woman Show, in addition to preparing the onstage presentation and visuals.
Interactive Content
IHC brought in and worked with Sharetapes to produce specially designed Sharecodes that were printed in each chapter of the graphic novel to unlock bonus content and play the corresponding tracks from the album. The links are programmed in real time with full analytics. These also create a unique way to update fans on the latest Skin&Earth news and content.
Signings Tour
While making her way across the East Coast on tour with Young the Giant, Lights stopped at local retailers along the way for promotional opportunities including Q&A’s and signings. IHC helped lock in appearance dates, assets, and promotion.
