Malawian singer Esua Mwamwaya and Radiclit’s Johan Hugo return as The Very Best with their latest single, Yoshua Alikuti. Esau’s voice is present as ever in this politically charged track that highlights the late Malawian president, Bingu wa Mutharika’s shortcomings as a leader. Musically, the song has a darker tone than we’ve been known to expect from the pair, but considering the sincerity of the subject matter, Esau and Johan have engineered a fine balance between the song’s arrangements and Esau’s genuine message. Additionally, the video is a direct play on Lil Wayyne’s video for, A Milli, offering a unique contrast between two very different worlds that are actually more closely related than one would think.
Village Beat, the production company who produced the video, have been filming in Kiamaiko, Kenya for a few years working on, Tough Bond, a documentary about four kenyan children and their addiction to glue. Through their visits, Village Beat has established a good rapport with the people and were able to secure the area for the Yoshua Alikuti shoot with the protection of the local gangs. While chosen for its similarity to Esau’s Malawi home, Kiamaiko is one of Kenya’s most dangerous slums and certainly lives up to its name as the crew were almost robbed of all their camera equipment while waiting in traffic. Fortunately for them, nothing was lost, and they were able to complete the shoot safely.
The Very Best will be releasing their new LP, MTMTMK, on July 17th through Moshi Moshi & Cooperative Music. In celebration, Nadastrom gives Yoshua Alikuti a moombahton makover in their latest remix which you can download below.
