Grimes has just released a new self-directed video for her single ‘California,’ off last year’s hugely acclaimed album Art Angels.
Filmed in Los Angeles and Paris, the video features cameos from Purity Ring‘s Megan James, HANA, model Eric Cheng, musician Born Gold, and rising star Mac Boucher, who is also Grimes’ co-director and brother.
In it, she oscillates between kaleidoscopic costumes and settings. One moment she’s dancing in a sculptor’s studio, the next she’s all Rhinestone Cowgirl, and then you blink and she’s ribbon dancing in the world’s most brightly colored gymnasium. I don’t know where that gymnasium is, but if I did, I swear to God I’d have a six pack.
But regardless of the scene, Grimes’ characteristic odd-ball style and fearless use of saturated hues are woven throughout, creating a highly stylized yet cohesive visual accompaniment to her much-loved song.
Oh, and fun fact: Grimes used samples from Rihanna’s “Pon de Replay” for this song.

Following her legendary performance on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon in which she transformed the set into a neon-lit dreamscape as she sang “Flesh Without Blood,” Grimes will head out on tour as Florence and the Machine’s opening act before appearing at several summer festivals, including Hangout, Sasquatch, Lollapalooza, Outside Lands and FYF.
